News > Students help develop Tactile Book

The national book charity Booktrust have worked with NCW students to develop an exciting tactile book that is accessible to both sighted and visually impaired children.

The charity wanted to work closely with visually impaired young people, and those who work with them, in order to create a really stimulating and meaningful touch and feel book, based on their own requests and experiences. Alex Strick, from Booktrust explained,

“For us, working with New College Worcester throughout the process of creating the 'Off to the Park!' book was crucial to its success. Indeed even the theme came from the young people themselves. We talked to the students through a number of visits about ideas for the book, what they thought of the mock-up and what they would like to improve. On every occasion, the students were an absolute mine of information and ideas! We feel the final result is a unique mainstream book which we are confident is fully accessible to both sighted and visually impaired children.”
