The NCW maths department teamed up this week with the maths department of Barnwood Park Arts College in Gloucestershire to collaborate with some fun maths challenges.

14 Barnwood students in years 7 to 10 came to learn about maths braille from NCW students and to help our students prepare for the UKMT Junior maths challenges held nationally every year.

Tobias teaching Maths Braille

Chelsea from Year 7 and Sophia and Tobias from Year 8 planned and led a lesson in using braille for maths. They did a fantastic job; leading the lesson from start to finish with teaching, setting tasks from worksheets and helping the Barnwood students write their maths on a Perkins brailler. The Barnwood students really enjoyed the session and by the end had learnt all of the braille numbers and some of the maths symbols.

After a tour of the college it was Barnwood’s turn to lead a lesson where all the students worked together to practise solving the tricky Junior Maths Challenge questions.

Everyone had an excellent afternoon and we are all looking forward to collaborating again with Barnwood in the near future.
