Visit from RSC Actor

‘Going Dark’ is a play currently being written for theatre company Sound and Fury which deals with the story of Max, who works in a planetarium and is beginning to lose his sight at the age of 40 with the eye condition Retinitis Pigmentosa.

John Mackay, the RSC actor playing Max, made a visit to NCW to do some research for the role by talking to Sixth formers and Year 11 students about their experiences.

Students were given the opportunity to find out about the production, which they will have the opportunity to go and see later in the year; and also the process of being an actor. In turn, John was able to gain some really valuable insights into the world of visual impairment which he can now take to the writer and also use within his own performance.

Emily, a student who has Retinitis Pigmentosa said of the experience, “Talking to John about Retinitis Pigmentosa made me understand myself, because he asked questions that I’d never given any thought to. It made me realise my own coping strategies and spatial-awareness skills. I’d always felt like no one else understands or even knows of Retinitis Pigmentosa but this has made me realise that it’s not so rare and so I don’t feel as ‘different’.

‘Going Dark’ will be playing at the Warwick Art Centre from Thursday 27th-Saturday 29th October.
