Preparing each student for the sighted world - how we promote independence

At NCW, we support each student toward independence in manageable steps. The whole college appreciates just how important it is for students to develop their skills and the means to be resourceful and confident in the sighted world.

Following a series of assessments, each student receives a personal mobility programme designed to equip them with the skills and confidence to travel competently and independently in any setting.

Students also have Independent Living Skills included in their timetable, with the opportunity to learn cookery, health care, first aid and other life skills in a classroom environment.

"These skills aren't just essential to the curriculum; they are essential to life." Trish Smith - Independent Skills Coordinator
