NCW Students Win Prestigious Award
A group of NCW Science students took part in a Science challenge and gained a prestigious CREST (Creativity in Engineering, Science and Technology) award at a event hosted by the University of Worcester and funded by QinetiQ.
They worked in teams with sighted students from Blessed Edward's, a local mainstream school, on a challenge which involved producing insulating bricks from reclaimed materials.
STEM ambassadors – who work in local industry and give their time for free to help inspire young people in science technology and design, engineering and mathematics (STEM) – were also on hand to lend a hand.
Sarah Hughes, Head of Science at NCW, said: “Our students were really excited to do this project and they worked really well with students from other schools, alongside STEM ambassadors from QinetiQ.
“There were 21 students in total, and in their groups, there was two visually impaired pupils with one student who was fully sighted. Last week, I went to Blessed Edward to talk to the students about how to be helpful but not patronising, and this worked really well as they worked so well together,” she said.
She added that one of the STEM ambassadors was visually impaired, providing a “fantastic role model” for the students.
