The acquisition of orientation and mobility skills is key to independence for blind and partially sighted young people.

The Mobility department is committed to the provision of the highest quality training for all students, maximising their independence. This is achieved by following a programme of skills enabling students to develop confidence and travel safely around the College and the local community. The needs of town centre/city travel are then addressed in Worcester along with bus and rail transport.

Mobility Training Programmes

Following a series of assessments, a personal mobility programme is designed for each student. Factors that are taken into account include age, ability, degree and onset of sight loss and any other additional issues or disabilities. We also look at areas such as motivation, residual vision and any previous experience of mobility training. The routes that have been developed are used to gradually increase skills and confidence in order for the student to be able to travel independently both locally and in the town centre.

Department Resources

The mobility department has a range of mobility aids from symbol canes and long canes to the new electronic Ultra Cane. The students also often use a monocular, tape recorders and large print and tactile maps are always available. Students are encouraged to maintain a reasonable level of physical fitness and stamina in order to take on board the challenges of the wider world.
