Life for a Visually Impaired Student in the 1800's

NCW will be presenting at the Commandery in Worcester, to explain what life was like for visually impaired students in the 1800s, compared to what life is like for NCW students today.

This will include some performances of the music which the renowned composer and organist William Wolstenholme, a former blind student at the Commandery, would have heard and played.

They will look also at the production and reading of Braille historically. Students will demonstrate the changes in the use of Braille and the way that technology is helping blind people today. There will also be opportunities to see how Mobility skills are developed.

This project by NCW students is funded by a Worcestershire County Council Community Grant aiming to raise awareness of visual impairment within Worcestershire and promote understanding of how successful people with visual impairment can access a wide range of activities. Other events during the week include a Paralympics day with a local Secondary school, a workshop with a junior school and a community event.

The event will take place on Thursday 14th July between 1;30pm-3:30pm. The Commandery is located in the heart of Worcester City centre opening times Monday – Saturday 10.00am – 5.00pm and Sunday 1.30pm -5.00pm and is part of the larger Museums Worcestershire Service. Entry to the Commandery is free for Worcester council tax payers on proof of address.
