Life At NCW
Creating a home-from-home on campus
At NCW, we appreciate that a boarding environment is not what most parents would have chosen were it not for their child's visual impairment. So our care staff team work hard to ensure the happiness, health and welfare of our students.
Each house has dedicated residential staff, with a Senior House Parent supported by a Deputy and an assistant plus two Community Service Volunteers. Sixth Formers are supported by a team of residential care tutors and a Sixth Form Hostel Manager.
Students are taught and encouraged to develop the mobility and life skills they need for an active independent life at the college and beyond. By the time they reach the Sixth Form, students are expected to cater for themselves in all areas including budgeting, shopping, cooking, washing and ironing. This builds their self assurance and eases their transition from college to university.
Weekends and evenings are always busy with a wealth of activities for students to try out and participate in, but it is the chance to do ordinary things together that students often value the most, even if it is just popping to the shops, going into town for a coffee or seeing a film.
"Students here are never the odd one out - you see kids relax into being themselves." Alan Drabwell, House Parent
