Independent Living Skills
In years 7-9 the students have weekly timetabled Independent Living Skills sessions as part of their curriculum. The aim is to develop their practical skills and also widen their experiences of food, cooking and general life skills using sensory and tactual methods.
In the classroom, we aim to equip students with an appropriate suite of skills, adapted to meet their individual needs; for example how to make a cup of tea, bake cakes or use a washing machine.
This is supported by the care staff in the houses, who teach students to prepare their own drinks and meals and, in time, to do their own laundry.
At all times the work is realistic and relevant to the individual student and we encourage each student to go at their own pace in a non-competitive environment.
The Independent Living skills team offer support and guidance with understanding and empathy ensuring each student gains in confidence as they begin to work at these important skills for life.
Sixth Form Programme
The Sixth Form ILS programme is provided on a one-to-one basis, so that students can gain practical life skills that enable them to live independently beyond the college environment.
In addition, appropriate advice, support and information, for parents and carers may also be provided to enable them to develop and support the living skills that students have gained whilst at NCW.
