Houses
Creating a home-from-home on campus
The houses are staffed by trained and qualified Residential Care Staff who encourage students to become competent in practical, everyday skills and this builds their self assurance and sense of responsibility.
Students are taught and encouraged to develop the mobility and life skills they need for an active independent life at the college and beyond. By the time they reach the Sixth Form, students are expected to cater for themselves in all areas including budgeting, shopping, cooking, washing and ironing. This builds their self assurance and eases their transition from college to university.
Weekends and evenings are always busy with a wealth of activities for students to try out and participate in, but it is the chance to do ordinary things together that students often value the most, even if it is just popping to the shops, going into town for a coffee or seeing a film.
The students are accommodated in six residential units. There are four junior houses with students of varying ages from year 7 to year 11. One of the junior houses is a single sex house and the others are mixed. Each house has a kitchen, utility room and shared bedrooms which students are encouraged to personalise with their own posters and decorations.
Each house also has a communal sitting room with comfy sofas where students can relax and watch TV.
Students have breakfast and their weekend meals in the houses and all other meals are provided in the school dining room.
