Famous Author Pays a Visit

Marcus Sedgwick, an award winning author, spent a day at the college talking to students about his work and the process of writing. Students from Years 10-13 had an opportunity to speak to Marcus in depth and asked him some thought provoking questions about his writing and the characters in his books.

Students asked Marcus how books are edited and he explained how he sends the manuscript to his publisher and they suggest changes on just about every page, then he has to revise the book several times before it is published. He also discussed the difference between terror and horror, how a book might grow from an idea into a whole story quite quickly, or over a period of several years, and described how some books need lots of research while others come directly from the writer's imagination. Many NCW students are writers themselves and drew much encouragement and inspiration from his visit.

When asked about his visit, Marcus said, "I’ve had a wonderful day at New College - it truly is an inspiring place, and if I didn't know what quite to expect beforehand, I wish my own school had been a bit more like this one. Seldom if ever have I met a friendlier, more engaging or more articulate group of students, and that goes for all the year groups I’ve spoken to. Thank you for making me feel so welcome and for sharing some of your time with me."

Marcus’s book ‘White Crow’ was nominated for the Carnegie Medal this year and NCW students had the opportunity to read his work in Braille and large print as part of the shadowing scheme organised by the RNIB. His work has proved to be very popular amongst the students, and some of them were rather star struck that they had actually met the author!
