NCW has a dedicated Reprographics Department that produces Braille and modified print for all our students. The department is vital to the college as so few books and learning resources are produced in Braille nationally. Our aim is to ensure that all students have high quality Braille resources at the time when they are needed.

Braille produced by the department might be anything from a worksheet or a single poem, an article or a short story or even a whole novel or A Level text book!

The original text is scanned into a computer, and then proof read for errors, before being transcribed using the Duxbury program, correctly formatted and then embossed and bound. Diagrams and graphs have to be carefully modified and the department can also produce tactile diagrams. All work is saved on a comprehensive archive, and we are often able to respond to requests from other schools for resources we have produced.

In addition, the department produces graded Braille for learners, using the Fingerprint program. This means that Braille is produced for an individual learner, using only the contractions they have learnt. As the learner progresses through the scheme, the Braille they read will become more complex until they have mastered the full code.
