Carbon Credit Game
At the end of some topics I ask the students to come up with ideas for a board game that will show their understanding of the topic. This is a different way for them to show their understanding rather than doing a test. The lesson before, the students come up with some ideas for the game and these ideas are pooled before agreeing on a final design.
The idea of this particular game was to move around the island by throwing a dice, moving squares and gaining and losing carbon credits. Everyone started with 100 carbon credits and then depending upon the square they land on they lose or gain credits.

One of the challenges for partially sighted students studying art at GCSE, AS and A level, is the high priority examination boards give to drawing.
In the Art Department at NCW we work to find ways for students to access drawing. One of the methods which works well for some students is to focus on what is known as negative space - the space around the main object – minding the gaps - rather than the object itself.
Some students can see the black area around the deer above more easily as the student copy drawing shows. Luke in Year 12, who studies both AS Art and AS computing, is also experimenting with using a virtual grid to create a vector drawing by keying in a Pyx digital draw... read more »

I am a self-confessed “foodie” and I really enjoy my food, eating out and trying new products. Many of our learners at NCW do not know how to make their favourite food and rely on a convenience form. Where I believe there is always a time and place for a takeaway or a shop bought item - sometimes it does not hit the spot or meet requirements of taste, satisfaction or nutrition. During enhancement sessions with the sixth form, we are giving the learners the opportunity to plan, buy and make their favourite foods. This has been quite an experience for us all.

A common practical when studying plant biology is investigating factors affecting the rate of photosynthesis. Plants produce oxygen which is invisible and odourless, so the practical is usually carried out with water plants; the bubbles of oxygen produced are observed. The practical is usually carried out with a common pond weed, and sighted students are instructed to count tiny bubbles - the faster the rate of bubble production, the faster the rate of photosynthesis.
This presents a problem for students with VI since the bubbles are often too small to see and therefore counting them and gathering valid results is not possible. A typical arrangement is shown below:

NCW prepares to take part in the Shakespeare for Schools Festival
This year we celebrate 400 years of Shakespeare – and 150 years of NCW. What better opportunity to show off our performance talents as a College than by taking part in the nationwide Shakespeare for Schools Festival?
This festival is hugely prestigious, and involves over 1000 schools (mainstream and special) performing 30 minute adaptations of Shakespeare plays across 150 professional theatres.
