A Gorilla, a T-Rex and Lady Ga Ga!

Millennium FX, an award winning special effects company whose credits include Doctor Who, Being Human and Saving Private Ryan brought along an animatronic gorilla, a T-Rex dinosaur, and head casts of famous people such as Lady Ga Ga and Johnny Depp to share with our students.

Most of the students at the College rely upon descriptions and small models to understand what many animals are like. Although this goes some way to understanding what creatures ‘look’ like, it doesn’t really allow them to understand the scale and features of creatures that they would normally be unable to approach.

The two life size Gorilla and T-Rex animatronic ‘suits’ were worn by Millenium FX performers who brought these animals to life for the students, moving around and acting like these creatures. Students were able to get up-close so they could touch and feel the anatomy, the scale of the creatures and how they moved and behaved.

Sarah Hughes, Head of Science at New College Worcester, explained, “We can describe to our students what a Gorilla looks like and how it behaves, but actually getting up close and touching a ‘real’ gorilla means they can really understand what it’s like. This is an incredible opportunity for our students. I’m so grateful to Millennium FX for giving us their time. We’re all really excited about this visit!”

Neill Gorton, Managing Director of Millenium FX, added, "We’re so thrilled that New College Worcester has invited us to what has been a really special day for Millennium FX’s creatures. Seeing them come to life for the students who have been able to rub the coarse pelt of the gorilla’s fur, feel the teeth of a Tyrannasaurus Rex and have their hair preened by a primate is a real rush for us!"

The visit to the college was covered by local TV news and filmed by Millenium FX to view the clips go to NCW on Television
